The Social Justice portfolio is responsible for coordinating initiatives that provide opportunities for Macquarie law students to engage with legal issues that have a social justice focus. This involves promoting career paths in the public interest, creating awareness of inequalities in the legal profession, fundraising for nominated charities, and stimulating debate about topical social justice issues facing the legal world and broader community.

The Social Justice portfolio consists of two key teams: Advocacy and Community Outreach. Each team is led by an Executive Officer and supported by a small subcommittee of 2-4 members who assist with initiatives throughout the year. The Executive Officers work closely with the Director (Social Justice) to plan and execute speaker nights and social justice events which seek to meet the overarching objectives of the portfolio - to instil a sense of community responsibility and passion for justice within the future of the legal profession.

Each year, the Director will bring their own social justice passion to the portfolio and aim to integrate that passion into the year’s events. The Executive Officers are also encouraged to bring forward a social justice passion which can be integrated into the portfolio. Overall the SJ team aims to educate students on many social justice issues both in the community and the legal industry.

Advocacy

The Advocacy Team is all about engaging students with social justice issues and providing practical opportunities for students to enhance their advocacy skills. This involves exposing students to new social justice issues, as well as allowing them to investigate and connect with issues they are already passionate about. We want students to maintain their enthusiasm for making the world a better place throughout their law school journey, and set them up to engage in careers that do just that.

Key initiatives within the Advocacy portfolio include biannual Speaker Nights, the ‘Will It Your Way’ Workshop and an interactive Practical Skills Workshop.

Community Outreach

The Community Outreach Team is responsible for organising initiatives with external organisations that are relevant to social justice. Our aim is to connect students to a wide range of social justice experiences and opportunities through engagement with relevant legal and community bodies.

Key initiatives within the Community Outreach portfolio include the annual Social Justice Trivia Night which is the flagship fundraising event of the year, Get Involved Guide through the MULS Social Justice Facebook page and the newly added Careers in Social Justice Networking Night.
