First Year Guide
This Guide provides early brand exposure and all-rounded guidance to new law students at Macquarie University undertaking the undergraduate LLB and postgraduate JD programs. What makes 2023’s First Year Guide stand out, is the new addition of sections such as Quick Tips on Note Taking, Sample LLB/JD Program Guides and ’Take Care of Yourself’ (which focuses on mental health and wellbeing through the discussion of stress and anxiety, imposter syndrome and balancing life as a law student). Ultimately, it is the aim of this Guide to encourage students to get involved as much as they can at university, and it through MULS that students can be involved in a range of opportunities such as Competitions, Events, Workshops, Subcommittees that will shape their professional, academic and personal development.
Competitions Guide
The Competitions Guide consolidates all our information and resources on competitions into one publication. It also provides valuable advice and insights from successful competitors and judges. With the 2023’s Competition Guides, there are new sections included, such as an Annotated Written Submission from a Grand Final Moot, Sample Agendas for certain competitions and information critical to understanding what preparation is expected for each competition. All of these new sections were implemented with the aim of encouraging students to appreciate the challenging yet exciting competitions MULS has to offer. Whether you are in your first year or your last year, LLB Student to JD Student, there is something for everyone. This guide will prove to be an invaluable reference for students throughout their university experience.
Clerkship Guide and Resume and Cover Letter Guide: Coming Soon
This Guide will assist students in their penultimate year who are interested in attaining a Summer Clerkship. Ranging from interview and networking tips, testimonials from former clerks and insights of the application process, the Clerkship Guide will be an invaluable reference for students on the recruitment process. Complimenting this Guide will also be a ‘Resume and Cover Letter Guide’, a mini handbook that provide students with useful tips on how they could structure their resumes and cover letters that reflect their eagerness to work for the firm they are applying to.
Alternative Careers Guide: Coming Soon
A new addition for 2023 Publications is the ‘Alternative Careers Guide’. As students begin to understand that the law is a diverse, versatile and interdisciplinary field, they may feel uncertain whether adhering to a ‘traditional pathway’ (i.e. becoming a lawyer) is the right choice for them. To accomodate to this common concern, this Guide will inform students of different careers they could venture into with their law degree. These different pathways include (but not limited to) careers in legal tech, consulting, academics and other fields that may have not crossed your mind!
Wellbeing Guide: Coming Soon
Introduced in 2019, the Wellbeing Guide focuses on the mental health of law students. The legal field is undoubtedly filled with well-rounded high achievers, and, in the pursuit of striving to be apart of this standard, it is at the cost of neglecting student’s mental wellbeing. This Guide will cover very common, yet unspoken, issues that students may face in law school, working towards overcoming the stigma that comes with mental health. It is the aim of this Guide that we not only open this conversation, but we continue it.
